Katherine (Section 6)
The Usher Ministry never crossed my mind when I joined City Harvest Church in 2000. Back then, I was so inspired by what the Church is doing for the community in Singapore. I was very touched by the Pastors’ and leaders’ love and reaching out to the people, regardless of their race and nationality, both young and old. Basically, what touches me is the Church’s commitment to the young, the disabled and the old folks, leading them from broken homes, wayward life back to a normal, well balanced and healthy lifestyle. The church is willing to go an extra mile to help those who are less fortunate and helping in whatever they can.
After a few months in church, I felt no sense of belonging in this place. Christianity is God's love for the people and in order for me to be obedient to God and his calling, I knew that I needed to join a ministry in order for me to learn how to do his will. Being an impulsive person, I signed up for ushering without knowing what I was heading for. I am glad I did. Luke 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. It has been my desire to reach out to people young and old. I have always wanted to make people comfortable when conversing with them, to help them meet their needs, comfort and encourage them when they are troubled and thus reaching out to them.
As an usher for the past 3-4 years, I have learnt how to overcome fear and become more courageous. God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Tim 1:7). The ICs and fellow ushers I work with are much younger than I, and I love serving alongside them. They were taught how to respect, care, encourage and be courteous to everyone. Besides, they were very co-operative and great emphasis was placed on team-work. With this training, I am more confident and people find my presence more approachable, not only in church but also in my workplace. I want to flow according to the vision of our church and that is to impact people in the marketplace.
Now, I look forward to serving every weekend and dedicate my Saturday for the Lord and His House. What I am doing is nothing great or fantastic, but as I serve week after week, I feel there is tremendous joy and some kind of achievement/satisfaction within me which I am unable to explain.
